Lychee is the small, round-to-oval tropical fruit of Litchi chinensis, an evergreen tree in the soapberry family whose fruit has a rough red rind, a single large seed, and a layer of translucent, perfumed white flesh in between. It is eaten fresh in season, canned in syrup, dried into chewy "lychee nuts," frozen, and pressed into juices and drinks, and it is prized across much of Asia for its sweet, floral, slightly tart flavor. The fruit grows in clusters on the tree and ships well only briefly, which is part of why so much of the global crop reaches eaters in canned, frozen, or dried form rather than fresh. What it is

Lychee is the fruit of Litchi chinensis, a subtropical tree in the Sapindaceae, the soapberry family, which also includes longan and rambutan — two close relatives the lychee is sometimes confused with on a market stall. The fruit is a drupe-like berry with three distinct parts: a thin but tough outer rind, or pericarp, that is bumpy and turns pink-red to deep red as the fruit ripens; the edible aril, a translucent, jelly-like white flesh that is the part people eat; and a single smooth brown seed at the center, which is not eaten as the fruit. The common English name "lychee" (also spelled litchi or laichi) refers to the same plant as the botanical name Litchi chinensis, and the dried form is often sold as "lychee nuts" even though it is dried fruit, not a true nut.

Nutritionally, the fresh aril is mostly water and carbohydrate, with very little protein or fat. Its carbohydrate is largely natural sugars, along with a small amount of dietary fiber. Lychee's most-cited nutritional feature is that it is a notable source of vitamin C, and it also supplies copper, potassium, vitamin B6, and a group of plant polyphenols — including epicatechin, procyanidins, and other flavonoids — that are concentrated more heavily in the rind than in the flesh. The forms differ sharply: canning in syrup adds sugar; drying removes the water and concentrates the natural sugars into a dense, sweet morsel while diminishing the heat-sensitive vitamin C; and juice or nectar keeps much of the sweetness while losing most of the fiber and intact structure. References to "lychee" in health discussions slide between these forms, and what is true of the fresh fruit does not automatically carry over to a canned, dried, or juiced version.

Lychee has been cultivated in southern China for well over a thousand years — by some accounts more than two thousand — and the regions of Guangdong and Fujian are historically associated with the finest fruit. It became a celebrated delicacy in Chinese culture, famously sought after by the imperial court, and it remains tied to seasonal festivals and gift-giving where it is grown. From China the tree spread through Southeast Asia and eventually to subtropical regions of India, Africa, Australia, and the Americas, and today India and China together account for much of the world's production.

In traditional Chinese medicine and other folk systems, various parts of the lychee plant — including the seed and the rind, not only the flesh — were used in preparations for a range of complaints, and the fruit itself carried cultural associations with warmth, vitality, and good fortune. These uses are presented here strictly for historical and cultural context. A long record of culinary and folk use is not the same as evidence of medical benefit, and much of the lychee's enduring reputation rests on its flavor, fragrance, and festive status rather than on any demonstrated health effect. What research says

The research on lychee is best read in tiers, and much of what is relevant to people rests on the general physiology of fruit, sugars, vitamin C, and polyphenols rather than on trials of lychee alone.

In laboratory and in vitro work, lychee polyphenols — particularly the procyanidins and epicatechin concentrated in the rind, and extracts of the seed — show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in cell-culture models, and compositional analyses have characterized the sugars, vitamin C, minerals, and phenolic compounds of many lychee cultivars. These are mechanistic observations and cannot be read as conclusions about health outcomes in people. In animal studies, lychee fruit and seed extracts have been examined in rodent models of oxidative stress, metabolic measures, and liver health, work that can suggest directions for further study while still requiring real caution before any extension to humans; findings in these models do not establish that eating the fruit produces comparable effects.

In human-relevant terms, the most established threads connect to vitamin C rather than to lychee specifically. Vitamin C contributes to the formation of collagen and to the body's antioxidant defenses, and its role in connective tissue is why severe, prolonged vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) is classically linked to bleeding gums and poor wound healing — a deficiency picture, not a benefit of eating any one fruit. Vitamin C is also at the center of one of nutrition's most discussed and least settled questions: whether it changes the course of the common cold, where the evidence from controlled trials has remained modest and mixed despite enormous popular interest. Safety & interactions

Ripe lychee eaten as fruit, in ordinary amounts, is widely regarded as well tolerated. Most practical considerations follow from the fruit's composition: it is naturally high in sugar, so large quantities of dried lychee, canned lychee in heavy syrup, or sweetened lychee drinks carry a meaningful sugar load that behaves differently from the whole fresh fruit. Allergic reactions to lychee are uncommon but have been reported, ranging from mouth itching to, rarely, more serious whole-body reactions, and people sensitized to related fruits or to certain pollens may be more prone to oral itching.

One safety issue is specific to lychee and important to state plainly: unripe lychee contains naturally occurring compounds — hypoglycin A and methylenecyclopropylglycine (MCPG) — that can interfere with the body's ability to make glucose. In a well-documented series of outbreaks in Muzaffarpur, India, large numbers of undernourished young children who ate unripe or fallen lychees, often on an empty stomach after skipping an evening meal, developed sudden dangerously low blood sugar and acute encephalopathy, in some cases fatal. This is a convergence of specific conditions — unripe fruit, very large amounts, undernourished children, and prolonged fasting — rather than a hazard of eating ripe lychee as part of a normal diet, but it is a genuine reason to avoid eating unripe lychee in quantity and why investigators advised at-risk children to eat an evening meal and avoid unripe fruit. Separately, the bright red skins of some imported lychees may be treated with sulfur dioxide to preserve color, which can matter to people who are sensitive to sulfites. Beyond these points, there are no widely established drug interactions for eating lychee as a food.

Who should be cautious

A few groups have particular reason to be thoughtful. Undernourished or fasting young children are the clearest case: the events in Muzaffarpur involved children eating large amounts of unripe lychee on an empty stomach, so unripe fruit in quantity is best avoided, especially for children who may be skipping meals. People managing blood sugar may want to account for the concentrated sugars in dried lychee, canned lychee in syrup, and lychee juices and drinks, which deliver sugar without the bulk of the whole fresh fruit. Those with known fruit allergies, oral allergy syndrome, or sulfite sensitivity have reason to be cautious, the last especially with color-preserved imported fruit.

People who are pregnant or nursing are sometimes uncertain about lychee; eaten as an ordinary ripe fruit it is a normal food, but there is little specific research on concentrated lychee extracts or supplements, which are a different matter from the fruit and are not addressed here. As with any single food that has acquired a health reputation, lychee is best understood as one part of a varied diet rather than a substitute for medical care, and anyone with persistent symptoms or a specific health condition should keep their healthcare provider informed rather than relying on a particular fruit.

For the fresh fruit, quality is mostly about ripeness, fragrance, and handling. A good lychee has a firm, intact, pink-red to red shell that yields slightly to gentle pressure and gives off a sweet, floral smell; dull brown, cracked, or leaking fruit is past its best, and a fully green tinge suggests underripe fruit. Lychees are highly perishable and do not ripen meaningfully after picking, so they are usually picked close to ripe and kept cool; their shells darken and harden within days at room temperature, which is normal and not by itself a sign of spoilage if the flesh inside is still sound.

The processed forms call for closer label reading. Canned lychees range from those in heavy syrup, which add sugar, to those packed in lighter syrup or juice; dried lychee ("lychee nuts") concentrates the natural sugars into a sweet, chewy form; and lychee-flavored juices and drinks vary widely in how much real fruit they contain versus added sugar and flavoring. Some imported fresh lychees have their skins treated with sulfur dioxide to hold their red color, which is worth noting for anyone avoiding sulfites, and as with other fruit, shoppers concerned about pesticide residues sometimes prefer certified-organic fruit while noting that washing reduces surface residues. The seed is discarded rather than eaten. Whichever form is chosen, fresh, canned, dried, and juiced lychee are meaningfully different products rather than interchangeable stand-ins.
